Ok, new to this forum.

I am the new proud owner of 27 acres. They consist of a massively over grown mixed fruit orchard,  lots of scrub, brambles and mud.

I am looking for inspiration as to what best to do with it.

Cheers

Hello and welcome [member=197789]Tyla[/member] .

I think you are in for a lot of work, but you'll get there in the end.

I suggest you start with the orchard, spend this winter pruning all those trees, except plums, gages, damsons and cherries which you prune in summer.  You will likely get a big crop of fruit after pruning, so think in advance what you are going to do with it. Organise storage, fruit press and bottles for fruit juices to sell, perhaps jam and chutney making.

The mud will dry up in the summer so try to stay off it until then. Cut back the brambles but leave the scrub until next year.

Whereabouts are your 27 acres?  What plans have you thought about so far?

I'm based in west Sussex. I've made a start on a small section of orchard, it's not so much pruning as removing the 1000s I'd dying ash saplings that have over taken it. I've made a little dent though and set myself a target for clearing this winter. I've also got a poly tunnel ordered and plans for a flock of laying hens. There's a lot of infra structure needed first though. The problem with it being a large plot is that the access track needs to be 200m + which is not cheap!

We run our laying flock (100 in three flocks) under our apple trees - two crops from one area of land, shelter for the hens and they eat bugs. Each flock has three paddocks - each henhouse has three popholes, each accessing one paddock, so we can rotate them round on a monthly basis thus giving them fresh grass every month, reducing worm burden and allowing the grass to regenerate. The internal fences are plastic deer netting but the perimeterfences are stock nettting plus deer netting, to keep Foxy at bay - whihc has workedwell except where the pigs in an adjacent pen dug down and let Foxy through.
The hens don't keep the grass down in summer - it still needs cut. We've tried Kunekune pigs (allegedly grazers but also rooters) and sheep in front of the hens but couldn't find away to protect the trees, so we just strim the grass now a few days before the hens go in.
Good luck with your project!
