Monday 6th January
I think we had a bit of rain overnight – I’m sure I heard it battering on the Velux. Definitely milder this morning, with light cloud. Dan’s decided to ask Murdo to come two days next week, rather than tomorrow. The trees for the Spinney should have arrived by then and the ground should be soft enough to plant them.
Still working on the speech. Sold a table and a chest freezer. And a bone saw.
Tuesday 7th January
Cold and dry. Speech coming together. Sold the bottles – yay!
Wednesday 8th January
Off to Oxford on the 9.14 train from Arbroath – The Cornishman, from Aberdeen to Penzance – but I got off at Birmingham New Street, to take a second train to Oxford. We were delayed on a viaduct near Chester-le-Street while a bloke threatening to jump off it was talked down.
I’m part of a panel talking about crofting; I know everyone, which is nice. Scottish Crofting Federation organised, and very well. I’ve never been to ORFC or, indeed, to Oxford. Lots of people. Lovely accommodation and good food at the pub next door. And lots of good craic with my fellow panel members.
Thursday 9th January
Attended a couple of sessions but decided the priority was to finish my speech this afternoon. Very cold here, as well as at home.
Friday 10th January
Our session was at 9am until 10.30am. Not a big crowd but all was fine. Then back to the station to get the 14.39 to Wolverhampton, then change for Haymarket, then Dundee. Bit of a trek, the train to Wolverhampton was late so it was a bit of a squeak to catch the Edinburgh train. It managed to make up 15 minutes between Carlisle and Haymarket, so the change there was more relaxed.
Saturday 11th January
Still cold, dry and still. Dan had a bonfire in the spinney, in preparation for tree planting next week. The weather is forecast to start to get milder from Sunday.
Bonfire.
I gave the hens their weekly clean out and feeder top-up. There’s bird flu in Kirriemuir, which is about 20 miles away. Not good.
Sunday 12th January
Starting to thaw, but not enough to stop me slipping and falling on my bum after collecting the eggs. Still, it was a treat for the dogs – I saved four, but two broke and were rapidly consumed.
When I popped into Arbroath, it was 4C on the car. It’s to be 11C tomorrow. Might make a start on the polytunnel cover this week.
