New ?? would this be of interest??
« on: September 10, 2010, 04:08:29 pm »
Hi,

We are searching for our smallholding, Powys area, we have put offers in on 2 so are getting close to owning.

We are buying a derelict building with planning and approx 9 acres, everything we look at has at least a stream.

Once purchased we will not be moving there for at least 6 months though more likely to be 12 months once there we will then start the house build. (we need to sell our house)

We wondered if anybody maybe interested in living there in a caravan (we would get the planning permission) and starting the smallholding side of things off, you would get a minimum of 12 months but to be honest we would look for someone that wants to stay forever, and has the same ideas as us.
Everything you produce is yours we don't want anything off you.

Hi and welcome.

I was looking for land for ages and a friend came to my rescue and offered some of his on a share. I was so over the moon and we get on so well, off to market tomorrow with him to look at pigs.

it can work, but you have to find the right match and in the real world it can be fraught with possible scenarios; as i said though it can work well so the very best of luck and well done for giving someone the chance and opportunity of their dream respect to you indeed. If only you were here and not the other side the bridge  :-[ ;) ;D

I'd be interested in something like this.  Please email me the details and we can discuss.  Cheers.  :farmer:

Sorry it's took a while for me to reply

You have requested details, Frank

I know you said PM you, I thought others may wish to know more, I have PM'd you some other bits.

Details are:
We are looking for a derelict building with planning permission with land, we want approx 10 acres
We have offers in on 2 plots at present, one of which gets a decision today (we are in a bidding war, though we were highest bid as of last Wednesday, the closing date is today)

If we don't get either, their seems to be quite a lot of plots available,so it will just be a little while longer.

We will not move until we have sold our house (we need the money to do the build) we too could live in a caravan, though a large part of this is living the dream, on our tick list for our dream it does not say live in caravan.

All plots have water on land ie. stream, river.
We have the finances to be able to sort out water, drainage and electric.
We will be able to get planning permission for a caravan because of the build, once the build is complete we can then apply to keep the caravan for agricultural occupancy, and as whoever does this with us will have used it for that purpose then we believe we will be successful in keeping the caravan. (After a further 4 years you can apply to replace caravan with a house)

Why we want someone else:
We will not be there for 12 months only weekends, Security
We are not very creative people, therefore we cannot see the best place to put the veggie patch, nor do we know where to start, at home 50% of our garden is veg but we are not reliant on it and therefore really just play at it.

We will be planting some trees for fruit and fuel, we know which trees but cannot forsee where we should plant them.

We have the ability to offer someone else this oppurtunity so we will.
In the longterm we think it's a good idea if we can share this with someone as it doesn't take twice as much effort to grow twice as much food, i will be away 2 days a week most weeks and therefore my wife will be left to do all the work.
On a completly selfish note i would like to go sailing once a month and with other people around this will be easier than on our own.

I have my pig and chicken husbandry qualifications and some experience 1 year and 8 years.

Good luck in your search, both for land and a partner. I have land and would love someone to share it with me. I have the vision (maybe :-\) but at 60 years old not the strength to carry things out.
I consider the important things about a smallholding partner is that
A  you get on well enough to become friends.
B  the person sharing does not try to take over thus leaving YOU as the one sharing THEIR land.
C has the same sort of aims as you.
D and most important has youth, strength, ambition and is not a wannabe dreamer!
Take your time and search carefully, it could end up a lovely experience or a nightmare.

A rather interesting point, we live in Great Britain, you don't need an income if you have no money coming in and none saved then our benefits system will feed and cloth you, our friends moved to the middle of nowhere sold their car (supposedly) therefore becoming unemployable as public transport u.s they have been on income support for over 10 years, they sign on every 3 months.

They have no mortgage, council tax paid (council tax benefit) and recieve over £100 per week
Their statement "What on earth are we mean't to spend all that money on"

I maybe niave (and fortunate to have an income) but isn't the idea grow, breed EAT
and live but a simple life.

My partner was made redundant eighteen months ago and he couldn't find a job that was suited to his training so he joined a couple of agencies and did whatever was going. Eventually (a week ago) he found the perfect full-time permanent job.
He was unemployed for less than a week.
