Hi everyone...

I recently mentioned this in another thread but thought I would pop it onto the forum for a bit of chatter and see what you all think ... recently I sent a mail to the forum owner and suggested maybe if some of us got together (in the virtual sense) we could create a little ebook for new members to the forum.. yanno all the good stuff which they could download as a .pdf and read through like a book, containing info on the various subjects, recipes, tips, tricks, helpful hints... there are so many good bits on this forum that I thought it would be nice to collate it into an easy read.

My intial thoughts for the sections would be pretty much to follow the main topic sections of the forum and produce an ebook / beginers guide call it what you will. I thought maybe one person could take the lead on each section collating info from the forum and getting the info / help from everyone else to produce the section of the ebook.

It would be nice to have it for new members to download / read and would make a lovely community project for the forum.

So what do you all think ? any additional ideas, thoughts, comments?

I think something liek this is planned fro George's recipes and anecdotes, and also in hard copy.  Sounds good to me but perhaps not something in great depth as it is actually more interesting to read the threads.  Might I suggest an indexed catalogue to the threads rather than a full e-book?

it's certainly worth considering .. tho I wouldnt know where to begin with something like that .. personally I love books of any kind hehe .. Im not thinking of a war and peace ebook (not sure if that was clear) but just some general starters for the topics with the most useful info and beginners info for where someone starts out I guess it could grow from there but I wasn't thinking of making it any real hard work for anyone

I'm now in the process of collating his recipes and putting them into sections - and trying to fit anecdotes in where applicable.

It would be great if a few more members could submit their favourite anecdotes and recipes for inclusion - I have a few from members, but need more, not all picked by me!

I think a section in the forums for FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) would be a way of achieving this without detracting from the forums themselves. Don't get me wrong everyone here is more than willing to help and answer questions regardless of how many times they have answered it before; but I do believe its would be beneficial, as there are so many threads with "This has been asked before  theres a thread here someware?" etc.

However in my experience of sites and forums, what ever you do, a lot of people will ask a question before looking into history, regardless of what you make available, tiz the nature of the beast

LoL so true .. maybe some sort of index is the way to go .. like i said at the start i was just putting it out there for musing over, i know as a beginner in some areas it's so useful to have practical advice from people who have done it .. Guess that why I ended up loving this forum so much

I think Sharon is right - we must get Wizard's Wanderings on the go first.  I'm sure we could all read his posts and come up with something appropriate to send Sharon for the book - especially since it is for the charity.

I don't think anyone is looking to impair the great idea and commendable efforts in producing the book for charity: I was under the impresion that the book was recipes ad anecdotes?

I believe the idea for this is a more on daily questions on the lines of practical information and common quires regards the general running and husbandry of a smallholding.

If this is going to happen it needs to be soon as I have an interview for a 'proper' job on Monday, and if I'm successful, i will have no time for the recipe book once I start so want to get it done ASAP!

I'd like to add a voice of support for Sharondp - I really think the idea of the book in memory of Wizard is a good one, and great for this forum community. It would be a shame to switch horses in mid stream.
I can't help from a personal point of view because I'm new, but I would be willing to trawl his posts and offer up anything that strikes me if that might help with content?

I also understand what people are saying about FAQ's etc - I've seen it done of other forums but I understand it takes a lot of collating. I was also wondering if Rosemary & Dan would prefer this kind of thing on the TAS website if forum members helped to put it together? Just a thought.

I think I might have confused in my orginal post ... I wasn't suggesting that we should start anything right away... I started the thread just for people to start musing over the idea and put forward their thoughts. Of course I would never dream of it detracting from Wizards book. I hadn't realised it was even something that was going on until you mentioned it, probably due to it all happening during my time offline (i'm still wading through posts from this time trying to catch up lol).

My post was merely to see what people thought about it .. not a lets do it right now... if enough people thought it was worth doing then we could look at what could be done next... but as I said maybe I didn't explain it quite right in my posts and that I was merely putting it out into the forum to see what people thought about the idea.

As for Wizards book, unfortunately I didn't really know him that well so don't have a favorite recipe ...I was only on the forum a short time before my PC went pop ... but my hat is off to you for making such a wonderful thing for him.
