http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Frkps9jmCVMif you can't have the logs , then there are other ways of doing it !!! Mud and straw can be used , either on a frame of willow or just on it's own (thick walls/cob ) . You don't have to add the horse or cow manure to the mix if you don't want to , it works just as well without it. The reason it was in the original daub/cob mixes, was they used animals ie horses or cows , to tread and puddle the clay and straw . It isn't there for any other reason , it is basically one of those urban myths that have stuck, that they mixed it in deliberately , they didn't ...they just didn't bother to scoop the crap out when the animals did what they do, while mixing the daub. Funny how even 'experts' now claim how it is needed in the mix ?
I have mixed and applied tons of daub at different times , and it has made no difference if manure was used in it or not , it just smells better if you don't use it !!! , goes on the same and lasts the same, maybe even longer lasting, as clay doesn't compost ... crap does !!!

Happy building ....
cheers
