What is with the wasps this year?

I have just come from the top field and the horse had loads buzzing around him and my neighbour said that at the weekend a lot of people had been stung in the churchyard which is at the top of the field, when I came back in the house there were about 12 in the bedroom.

What is making them increase in numbers this year?

Dont have wasps in Shetland :D    no ladybirds either :(
