This is tried and tested here in France and was information passed onto me yesterday. It has been passed down the generations, and applies to not only with lambs but calves as well. My friends French neighbour/farmer used this method recently on a newborn calf and mum and baby are now doing well.

If mum is not interested in her newborn, restrain her first then pour cider over the wet body of the newborn. Mum licks it every time and then the bonding process continues.

It really does work, and of course you get a very happy mum!!

Can I just pour half the cider on the lamb and then drink the rest myself

I have found its not the first moments of life which are the problem, its trying to stay interested for 18 years that tramatic

Does that work with ponies too ?

This post just came up in the 'related threads' suggestions, and I know it's old, but has anybody tried it? Just curious!
