Tractor wheels question
« on: March 01, 2018, 07:15:00 pm »
Does anyone have any experience of changing the wheels on a compact tractor to accommodate more turf friendly tyres? We have a Yammar compact tractor and it came with narrow wheels with tyres that are great on a muddy surface but my OH wants to use it year round, all round our property, which includes what we laughingly call 'the lawn'. (It's not close mown level grass but we don't want everything chewed up). He's discovered you can get turf tyres and replacement wheels from America, but obviously it costs rather a lot to import them. He wondered if anyone has had a similar ambition for their tractor, done this, found somewhere to buy the appropriate rims and tyres without importing from the States, or found any other solution? (I am prepared for the possibility we could be alone here! ;D)

Have a search on eBay, often 2nd hand turf wheels/tyres available....lots of dealers who may be able to help.

An additional cautionary warning. That might be a small tractor but you can get a suprise re the weight of the wheels... particularly if they've been ballasted with water for a front loader.
Have a word with local agri engineers.. they often have solutions you might not have thought of such as wider tyres that will fit on your rims or doubling up the number of wheels to reduce wt loading.

Good points above, personally I have some worn agricultural tyres on  my tractor...I find these work in mud in the winter and in the summer (which is the only time you want to be driving on your lawn) they are not so aggressive (as new unworn ones)  and don't damage the lawn anyway.  Turf tyres are useless for muddy winter conditions.

Thank you for the above advice and ideas. Worn tyres is great suggestion actually, that might be just the job. If we ever doubted the need for a tractor, the current weather (and half a mile of track between us and the road) would convince us, because we've got a scoop!!!

I've got turf tyres on my ford1720 and as Stufe says they are no good in muddy conditions even with 4wd. I have to do any work when the land is dry or go downhill through any muddy patches.
