Shetland cattle
« on: August 02, 2010, 09:40:50 am »
We've just (I mean in the last hour) bought two Shetland heifers - Beadies Breeze and Beadies Blizzard. They will come down on the boat from the islands once they are weaned in the autumn. I am just so delighted. They come from a well regarded herd; their mothers are full sisters and they are by the same bull.

We wanted a cow to hand milk and to produce beef. We couldn't source a cow so decided to buy two calves that we can handle in preparation for milking in the future.

Oh wow wish I had the space for a couple of house cows, we used to have them when I was younger and I loved milking them (by hand) as the reward was always a glass of lovely fresh milk and a spoonful of cream

Look forward to hearing all their adventures.

Not TOO many adventures, I hope  ::)

shetlandpaul, the breeder is David Smith, Beadies, I assume.

We might try and go up if Dan can use his airmiles to get us a free flight! Never been to Shetland before.

Lucky you. Will be looking foward to hearing how you get on with them when they arrive. Off to Shetland myself on Saturday but I doubt very much if my OH would be happy if I added cows to our lot  ;D

Wonderful!!  I was so looking forward to rearing a couple of calves this summer myself, but after the TB problems, it has put me off keeping cows any more :(
