Farming on Orkney?

Found this. Looks interesting and beautiful, albeit would be hard to live wouldn't it? Looks pretty harsh tbh

Much cheaper than around here but... there's nothing there!!! No customers to sell to. No sunlight. Lots of wind... cold...

I believe this would be of interest to you as its uk s most northerly water buffalo farm - on Orkney

I love Orkney when I visited it years ago. We went with a view to moving there but ended up on Arran.

Island life is harsh. Costly to feed animals. You would need to research what you plan to do and check out markets etc. Most Islanders have more than one job.

The school systems seem good though.  Every child gets to learn a musical instrument from day one up to leaving.  Makes for really good socials.

Hay can be a big problem.  Someone posted in one of the horsey communities the other day that they were paying £70 for a round bale on Shetland this winter, because it's having to be brought up from mainland Scotland.  Delivery to Orkney is slightly cheaper, but there's very little to come over from Caithness, farmers here are having to look further south.

The ground is more fertile on Orkney though so it maybe that people can grow their own.
