Help think footvax caused abscess
« on: August 03, 2017, 02:57:13 pm »
This morning I noticed sheep wool had come away from sheeps skin when I looked there's a round patch looks like it's been an abscess and it's popped its not deep but perfect round in shape a bit bloody round edges looks like it's healing not sure as I'm only guessing
It's around the same site we're footvax was given
So I checked rest of sheep found one more where wool coming away and when I looked there's a very large lump am I right I thinking it could be abscesses ???

Yep apparently it happens with foot vax and the advice is to leave well alone. Used foot vax once never again!!

Ours did come up in a few lumps when we footvaxed. Nothing quite as bad as that though.

Personally, I'd give that one a go with magic blue spray, and then just keep an eye on it, keeping careful watch for maggots. Others may know more than me and advise differently though (as usual!  :) )

for future referenece when using footvax its best to use a sterimatic type needle or wash the needle in dettol between sheep.

FOOTVAX contains a light mineral oil ,which often causes an inactive lump for up to 10wks, this is why the advice is not to inject within 6-8 wks of shearing as the top of the lump can be cut right off plus not to inject within 6months of any sale or show

It's an automatic injector gun thingamajig, which sterilises the needle in between each injection. This helps to reduce infections / abscesses at the injection site for things like Heptavac.

More info here, from when I first used one. HTH!

Shep53 - you forgot also inject footvax during the winter if you can, to avoid fly complications with any abscesses. It's a nasty vaccine, for sure. However, I have to say that ours only came up in very small lumps when we used it.

I used Footvax once, too, and haven't seen any footrot or scald in the flock since 2007.  I'd vaccinate after the fly season if I had to do it again, as lumps were a problem in the younger sheep - the older ones may have tougher skins.
