dosage
« on: June 22, 2010, 10:32:17 pm »
just had a reply about worming saying that the 2 mls of panacur that milly and molly had last week was not
enough.
they both weigh in about 34 kilo,
if any one of you has goats weighing in at this how much dosage do you give?
can vets get this wrong as they know me and the goats and knew how much they had last time?

As far as I know goats should 1.5 times the sheep dose of wormer, and yes Panacur 2ml is probably not enough, but do they actually have worms???

Goats need a larger dose than sheep do, and not all vets are aware of this. Not all vets have experience with goats, and they may just follow instructions on the bottle for sheep. I would try and give as Anke says, about 1.5 times the dose for sheep, maybe a little more, but not as much as 2 times the dose.

The problem is, that nothing is licensed for goats, so we have to use sheep medicines etc.  I have an awful problem at the moment with Cain and Abel.  Never had a worm problem in all the years we have had them, but the vet thinks they have a parasite problem - or liver damage. Anyway, I have come to the conclusion that my dosage of panacur has not been enough, they are big tall boys.  Poor boys have had sheep pour on, and all sorts over the last couple of weeks, so hopefully back on track.  That has taught me to make sure they get enough wormer in future.
