i am interested in all things data and spreadsheets to identify qualities in flocks
i use my own methods when picking my poultry for breeding

i was wondering if any of you use data when recording your sheep

i start lambing in the next month and would like to use values to determine qualities in my flock

i have 4 ryelands and a tup
so would be great to see how some other people record data to improve the their flocks

i figured it could be a good way to start only having a small flock of sheep

I have my own (paper-based) system. Well, a card index actually. Every registered pedigree breeding animal has a card with details of dam, sire, date of birth, registration details and so forth. I also add information on lambing, using: oho - on her own; jap - just-a-pull; gm - good mother. I also add notes on how well the lambs did. It does allow me to trace back six generations and follow trends in the flock. I've culled out triplet bearers, poor mothers, prolapses, consistent small twins and mastitis - without mercy. Lambing has become easier every year and for my main breed, the Southdown, things like carcase are low on the list of priorities, as they all have a good carcase. I have bought a ram with high EBV's, just to see if there was an appreciable difference between his offspring and those of ones I'd previously selected by eye and feel, and there was no discernible difference in his lambs' growth rate or any other aspect.

Sounds good I think I can create a database with similar points
I feel I need to be strict on my cull ewes and not feel sorry for them for the long term good of the flock

I would talk to [member=35918]Me[/member] I think he records with EBV's so he may be able to help you. I only buy EBV recorded rams now and I know a few sheep breeders who might be able to advise you?
