recycling scrap
« on: June 18, 2010, 12:27:03 pm »
in line with Danielle's post on buying to recycle , I thought I would put some pics up of my metalwork bench I am making out of some scrap .
I couldn't afford to buy a bench and old tables fall apart in no time due to the heavy battering they get . So , I thought I had best make one out of some scrap I had laying around.
The top part is an old bunk bed frame used as is once the springy bits were removed. I turned the frame upside down so I can lay some old kitchen worktop , or 4"x2" directly in the recess.
the bottom shelving part , is made from a couple of very old folding divan bed frames. You can see the join and the hinges in the pics !!!
I would have liked to have used another bunk bed frame for the shelf , but I didn't have the other one !!!
The legs are the same as the shelf , another old folding divan , just cut at the join/hinge . They were the perfect height without cutting down then .
I don't have a grinder ( I hate using them anyway , as I saw someone after they had a disk break up on them in use ...yuk yuk yuk !!!) , so I used bolt cutters to cut the join as the bolts were rusted solid .
The divan had angle brackets already fitted , so that saved some cutting . I just had some drilling to do , to fit it all together .
My electric drill is buried in the shed somewhere , so I used my old breast drill . It can operate at 2 speeds and as long as you can get some weight behind it , it makes short work of angle.
I now just have to cut some old metal shelves to size to finish the shelf , and maybe the same for the top , till I get some secondhand kitchen worktop !!! and fit a few diagonal strips on the back and sides and thats it ...job done .
That gives me a work bench 6'3" x 2'6" for the cost of a dozen or so bolts and some elbow grease , the paint I found in an old scrap car !!!! lol.

cheers

Russ

I made a shabby looking run for the chickens, made it in a rush when I first had them and it's still firm and used.....love the thrill of getting something for nothing!!

Nice job! I've got some heavy pieces of pallet racking that need a use. Can't decide whether to use it for supports for the roof of the chicken run or a bench. Decisions, decisions eh?

lol... I don't drink George  !!! ;D  they are just growing on a bit of waste ground .
The top will either be some old kitchen work top , or some 4"x2", dependant on what comes along first . In the mean time , I will be using some old metal shelving panels .

KQ , make the bench ... you can use it to make some supports for the chicken shed  !!! lol.
I wish I had some more heavy duty type stuff to make my bench from , but I didn't ..just the bed frames . Still, better than nothing .

cheers

OH made me a bench for my greenhouse a few years ago out of some scraps of wood, it is absolutely solid and when we had gales the greenhouse blew away and all that was left was the bench,

Russ in times gone by I have made all sorts of things with bed irons. Now theres a thing I have not seen any bed irons at Potts for years now .Mind you there is all ways plenty of box section ends that come in from the Humber Bank Factory's In my better days this year I have made a shed See if you can visualise it It's in the back yard in a corner and it is a lean to 5ft long 41/2ft tall and 4ft at the front so it has a sloping roof to let the rain run off. I have clad it with a shuttering ply roof and clad it with mineral felt.I then fixed 6m/m Stirling Board to the two sides and Ronsealed them Green. Two sides ? Yes two On the front right (long side) I have rawlbolted a 3x3 3ft 9" piece of angle to the wall.I have welded two hinges to the angle and welded those to the front vertical of the shed.I have welded a ring to the left rear vertical and a ring to plate and fastened the plate to the wall.So I or Kath can undo the lock ,swing the shed out of the way get the wheelie bin out and close the shed. When its emptied.put it back in.and there is room for the hose and things we can get them without bending down a nigh impossible task for me to do nowadays. How much did that bloody lot cost ? Absolutely nothing I had some bits of 1" square box which came from a project I helped with years ago I had to weld a bit or to together  The shuttering ply I liberated from a skip The Stirling board David gave me The felt and nails I scrounged from Paul What I have told you fibs I had to buy a slitting disk for the grinder a £1 from Tickerty boo and an awful lot of time.I could have made the whole thing in a day when I was fit and well It's gone on since February it puffs me out getting the tools ready never mind using them ;D ??? ::) :farmer:
