Did anyone see countryfile last night (6/6/10)? i couldn't believe the amount of male kids that are culled!  It makes me angry to think that their are people starving in other countries and could make use of these animals. I know it would take alot of money to set up such a scheme but it is disgraceful.

yes, I saw it.
and what a beaurocratic process for rearing the male calves that "aren't the pretty ones"... one farm, to another, to another etc. what huge costs this must incur, cos I bet they're sent by lorry.
there are people going hungry in this country too, but I noticed the price of goat meat was still quite high...

:goat:we are raising goats for meat this year and shall sell some it will be sold at what we think a fair price so more people can afford the experience.

we had 3 older goats put in our freezer and with the bbq season upon us are getting through quite alot at the moment, it is always hard to try and convert the public from any thing outside of lamb beef etc. but once you pursuade them to try it they will be back for more with low fat it is a very healthy option.

Goat meat is very nice.  The Anglo Nubians in particular give very nice lean met, with little fat.  Not that I intend eating Cain and Abel!!

I'd like to try goat meat, we have a goat farm nearby where they used to kill the billy kids, I know they hated doing it but there was only a market for the milk and dairy products, As far as I know they now have a small market for the meat, I sometimes find the milk and cream to to taste a little 'goaty', how does the meat taste? is it goaty at all? If you know what I mean!!

D'uh!!!  am i thick or what - dont answer!  i never really thought that goat meat was eaten - so i wonder what i thought happened to all the billy goats!!!!

i was just about ready to start 'convincing' hubby that we should get a cow, but now I'm thinking maybe goats would be the better option.  and knowing there was an 'outlet' for any boys, makes me feel a lot more comfortable.

Is there anywhere in the Fife area that I could try some to see if we like the taste does anyone know?

I've started this year with my goats as an enterprise producing goat meat.  Only one billy and 5 females this year were born, so won't make my fortune yet!

i am registered organic, and I think there will be a market for organically produced goat meat.  The person I bought the goats from already produces goat meat and sells it as well as serving it at dinner in her B & B where it is very well received.

I've never tried it either but would like to, if only out of curiosity. Veal's a bit the same - in principle, not taste. We had rose veal and it was lovely but the public generally still  have a thing about veal.

I had goat curry in Africa years ago - it was gorgeous. It really is a cross between lamb and beef, dark meat.
even now I shake the curry powder at Reggie the togg kid when he escapes, bites my armpit, butts my butt etc...

Goat meat is lovely but I rarely see it for sale. If we kept goats we'd certainly consider meat.

Mmmm...I saw that and I am quite tempted to have a go at goat rearing now.  I love curry goat (Jamaican stylie) and have eaten goat in a lot of foreign countries but never see it in the butchers (maybe in Tottenham).  Am going to find a beginners guide...in fact there is probably one here.
