Insurance for Water Pipes
« on: November 13, 2016, 10:05:57 pm »
Our water is supplied from a public pipe that runs to a nearby farm and then out to 3 or 4 points.  We each send our meter reading once every 3 months and pay our part of the total bill.  We are each responsible for the pipes between our properties and other bits here and there.

Does anyone have experience of insuring the liability for maintaining the section of a shared feed such as ours?  I am wondering if we need specialist insurance or whether a specialist such as the NFU would be best to speak to.  We currently have one & buildings cover but I doubt it will cover such pipework which probably totals between 1 mile and half a mile for our ability.

Thanks

You may be able to insure yourself through your farmers union - i think my cover is upto 1000 of wtaer.  But then thats on my property, unsure about  a shared pipe.

Are you wanting cover for repairs too? Cos we dont have that - its just to cover wtaer leaks.

Thanks for that, the water supply seems complicated when you are used to a simple water company pipe rather than a feed of another property.  We get on with the neighbours but we just want to be prepared should the worst happen.  We'll see what the NFUS offer, not exactly sure what we need but not even sure why we aren't entitled to a service pipe of our own though I guess the water company are happy to save the cost by splitting our feed between properties across the fields.

When you say your cover is up to 1,000 does that mean litres of water?

Many thanks,
Mickey

£1000 - so at 1.50 a cubic meter - its a full leak out of a 20mm pipe for a week i would say

Where is your nearest stand pipe for the fire service?  It might be worth pressing to get a fire outlet - thats the water board responsibility, have you got many house around?

Sorry, just seen this.  Can you explain that bit for me, we don't have any fire point, nearest property is about half a mile away.
