Sheep isn't right, what to do?
« on: November 04, 2016, 01:31:00 pm »
Hi All

As some of you may remember, we recently got 3 lambs at 6 months old when they were weaned.  They've been doing really well and were wormed before they left the farmer.
One of them is off colour though.  She's laying down more than normal, not fussed on feed, staying away from the other 2 and pretty much wanting to be on her own.  She had a limp which we treat and she's fine (I don't know what it was, but it went after iodine).  She does have a very mucky bum though as she's now got runny poo.
What would you guys do?
We have no medication however I can get to an agricultural store today/tomorrow and get what I need, if anything.  We're registered with a vet should the worst come to the worst.  I also have the farmer we bought them off on hand if really needed.
Thanks, much appreciate any advice.

May need worming again or fluking? Have they been vaccinated. My advice would be to take her to the vet rather than wait for a diagnosis from people who can't see the animal.

Vet asap.
Sheep hide illness until it's severe as they are prey animals. What you describe sounds serious, so I'd say she needs seen if you're to have any chance of saving her. Good luck.

Only keep a few ewes as a hobby and to keep grass down but recently had some of this year's lambs losing weight and messy bums. Had a worm count done, came back very low. Vet suggested Cobalt and Selenium drench. Virtually overnight result. All dried-up and now looking good. Asked about ewes and was told they are in very good condition. Only effects growing lambs.....Just a suggestion. Vet said very bad year for this deficiency in this part of country(North Hereford)

Vet asap. We had a problem with vitamin B deficiency which first signs were messy behind and lethargy- within 48 hours we lost 1 lamb and another week later we nearly lost another but thanks to the vet she was ok. If any animal isn't well and you can't put a finger on what is wrong it's best to get the vet.

With the amount of rain this year I would suggest fluking, infact i did my last week to make sure, can be brought from most farm shops etc

Finally have an update for you.  I spoke with the farmer we bought them from who wasn't overly helpful.  I fed her coarse mix and a digestive to get her close and she was interested.  I cleaned up all the poo I could, her and where she goes, and the next day noticed the poo was starting to take a shape again and not just land like a cow pat.  I stayed with her for the day and she was picking up and interested in the food again.  She righted herself with no intervention after another day or so.  I had the vet on standby but as things were heading in the right direction we waited.  Thankfully the 3 of them seem happy and well at the minute.

They had just been treat for fluke.

I am interested to hear the cobalt and selenium, thank you for that.  Thanks to everyone who offered ideas and support too.  It does help talking these things through.
