From your resident nutter..
It's that time of year.. chestnuts will grow even from the supermarket. I;ve had zero success with bought chritsmas walnuts or almonds but someone must have a tree..or know soemone with a tree and even if they failed to keep nuts then the squirrels will have planted some. Filberts too.
Grab anything like this and stick a few in a  pot outside.. everyone with land can find a hedgespace or field corner for a nut tree or three. For enthusiasts https://www.agroforestry.co.uk/product-category/plants/nuts/  has more varieties than you can shake your walnut beating stick at though you may have to pre-order for next year.

Your grandchidren will thank you

Looking forward to our first harvest! In the last 18 months we have planted 2 Almond Trees, 4 Walnut Trees, 4 cob nuts and 12 hazelnuts. Might have to wait a few years for the walnuts though

I award a silver star... if you want to go for gold then add  a sweet chestnut and a cold hardy pecan. For platinum awards you need to think further outside the box.....

My list is:
Monkey puzzles, bought in and potted on. Have conkers - horse chestnuts, bag of hawthorn, rosa rugosa, and load of dog rose hips. And a handful of Apple pips these are all due for planting.  I have half a doz cherry seedlings that I want to pot on and in the spring hopefully will get several hollies, budlia, flowering current from a friend who's garden is over crowded...  All for hedgerows on the farm :-)  But all very pedestrian/boring and not many nuts - do sweet chestnuts fruit in Scotland, Angus?

I have several monkey puzzles... not nuts as such but edible seeds. Unless you plan to graft then your cherries and apples will need luck to be for human use. It's import and transport I'd like to reduce.

My lidl bought chestnuts and hazelnuts failed. I bought a net of each, put a handful of each in fridge, freezer for a few weeks and rest I sew directly. Four months on I have trays of rotten nuts which I've just emptied out.

If anybody in West Norfolk area would like a walnut sapling I have  a few to give away (thanks to the squirrels !) as already have 3 planted in our orchard that are growing fast and the original one which is huge and about 75 years old and produces up to 100kg of nuts a year for us as well as feeding the resident squirrel population. Also have sweet chestnut (5 years old not yet nutting), hazels & almond (similar age and each produced a few bowls of nuts last year) and just planted 2 tiny pistachio trees that I bought from Direct Plants at Pott Row but I got the last 2 in autumn but they may have more.  I would love a hardy pecan if anybody know where any are available ?

The link I gave earlier in this thread to agroforestry they had hardy pecans.. you have to order and get a sprouting seedling come autumn. It's a long wait and some of my 4 seedlings failed second year. I think I have only one left. There is a place in the states that can provide large pecan trees. I contacted them years ago but the issue was that US export rules require outgoing quarantine and they would only sell in $10K lots - as in a whole container full! I did even think about that and then sell on...

For odd places that don't advertise pecans (but just might be able to source them cos they do weird stuff at times) - The palm and cycad centre near syon lodge london or evergreens in croydon lane banstead. The former specialises as per their name but I did buy soem citrus there once. I used to know the guy from the days he was a tiny shop in Putney just selling palm seeds. Evergreens does archtectural plants - things like 20 foot high poplars - but also some hot house stuff.. like really big tree ferns and palms and 15ft high citrus. I got some huge blueberry bushes wholesale there once after doing a favour for the manager.
