My parents have always had landrover discoveries, 1 series, for many years. this will be the second one we have had and I personally love em. However as cars generally do start to fail, so has this one. It has come to the point were it needs a lot of welding, so far we were quoted between 300-400 £ for it, final bill turns up at £500-600,plus more welding still to be done, about as much as the vehicle would be worth in my opinion. I know it only probably has a year left on it if we spent a lot on it to fix, it really wouldnt be worth it, we are  hoping to get a double cab pickup on finance if we can afford to do so somehow. I was wondering what would be the scrap metal value of a vehicle like this?

What engine does it have in it WBF?  If you have the time, breaking it for parts will get you a far higher return than just weighing it in for scrap.

Yeah which engine? The 200tdi engine is getting rarer, and defender enthusiasts will pay extra to get hold of one. 300tdi is less rare but still popular for conversions.

Td5 and onwards... face value.

The car weighs 2 tonnes. Scrap value is on the floor. 200 to 300 quid max at the crusher I would reckon.

Hmmm, probably a 300tdi then, or maybe even an early TD5? (didn't the engines change sometime around 1998?)

A quick Ebay search shows 'spares or repair' Discos of that vintage going for £300 to £500, or £600+ in running condition with some MOT left. If you know you want to change it, I'd get it sold before it needs expensive repairs to get through its MOT. It shouldn't be hard to sell.

My 98 defender was a 300tdi, but the very last of them. I don't think there were any disco 1's with a td5... but I may be wrong there. In which case it would be a late 300tdi. Engine. Googling 300tdi vs Td5 will show you how to tell the difference.

Thanks for the info guys Problem is it has just failed its MOT due to more welding needing doing. It runs quite well, its just getting rather old I think. The body really lets it down in the end though doesn't it? It used to belong to a vet before we bought it and was in excellent condition for its age, although had had work done to it from the mechanic we bought it off. Really decent guy too Was thinking of buying a discovery 2, as we really love them, but just can't really seem to afford one atm. Was thinking of getting a double cab on finance.

2 nuggets from a vehicle addict...

1) rust eventually kills discos... and rangies,  unless you have enough money to commission a refurb

2) In contradiction to the above... the cheapest car is the one you already own.

New or nearly new things on finance are more reliable of course, as long as it doesn't screw up your finances. I like the vw toureg (v10 diesel or v6 petrol) for towing capacity and plush value, and maybe the Isuzu rodeo for most economical diesel pickup.

Beware disco 2's until you do some research. The v8's all slip their cylinder liners, and the td5 is prone to electronics issues.

Landyzone is a great (if slightly feral) landy forum resource.

L322 range rovers (with the td6 BMW engine) are incredible value these days... but same warnings as everything else built in Solihull sadly.

A 90 is a different story. Prices for "proper" ladies have gone proper daft since they stopped making the defender. I'm sure you'll get someone willing to pay 2k it.

I'd love to get hold of a fixer upper 90 or defender 90 to restore for my dad, but I've got no hope of picking one up for under 1500 quid any more.

Break it - then scrap it.

Stick a wheel nut on ebay for 99p and say the rest is available to strip.  Then sell the rest over the phone.

You should get around £80 to £100 for a pickup of scrap depending on where you are.

A decent 200 or 300 tdi engine is worth 400-500 quid.
