Turkey question?
« on: November 02, 2016, 10:21:45 am »
Off to a poultry auction on Saturday, right at the end of a huge amount of birds I have seen a turkey hen, anyone have a rough price guide for her? I have no idea but would love to have her however if the rough price is a bit high for me I will spend my pocket money on some hens. Sure one of you lovely people will have an idea.

What age?  What breed?  Do you intend to breed from her?  Do you have a stag?  I breed Narragansetts for conservation purposes and would expect a Summer-born hen ready to begin laying in April the following year to go for around £45 upwards.

just says Bourbon hen. I have all sorts of poulttry and have worked with turkeys, they seem to free range okay with hens, and was hoping she would do the same, maybe purhase some eggs later?

Watch out for turkeys catching blackhead if mixing turkeys and chickens on the same ground.  Look at the legs - if they look thick and a bit lumpy or ribbed she may be two or more years old and less productive than a bird in her first or second year of laying.
