so we put our new boy with the girls on saturday
how long would you recommend leaving him in with the girls once the job is done

i know some people take them out straight away but is there a reason for this,
i suppose i am think more interms of could he make the sheep abort or anything
he is a Ryeland just incase each breed was different

leave in for a full cycle plus a day or two ... to catch any which missed first time round ... or identify a non working ram (Hopefully Not!)  So I usually go for 3 weeks .... Then OUT!  (so you know when exactly lambing will finish.... wont affect in lamb ewes if he stays in ... but you don't want to be waiting for that ewe which might lamb weeks after most of them!)

2 x 17 days = 34 days


I leave mine in all winter though (they all get serviced within the two cycles anyway, unless there is something wrong).  It depends whether you want a definite end date of lambing or not.

So was thinking more along the lines of once they are served

Yeah, raddle him (harness or paint) to verify that he's serving them, change the raddle colour every 17 days, then leave him with them.  In theory each ewe should only receive one colour on it's bum..

We leave ours in until after lambing, always handy in case some don't get in lamb straight away and he will have covered them all then. Some one on here told me about keeping him in to protect lambs from foxes?

We leave our Ryeland tup in all year (except mid-August 'til the beginning of November). He stays with his girls all winter and through lambing.

Just be careful that he doesn't push em off their food during the winter.

Ours went in on Saturday and is coming out first week of December- but that's only because his owner is en route to our holiday ? He does have a harness on though to see what's going on... Served his first ewe last night

I would advise though that if you advertising on preloved if they are pregnant or might be you cannot say that on the advert as they refuse to list any animal whether it be farm or pet if it is pregnant or if it might be, only found this out today! I understand why for pets, but farm animals no

Don't forget that he shouldn't have the same hard feed as the ewes get in late pregnancy.  It will cause urinary calculi in rams.

with only 4 I would leave him in too.

 Just to clarify   2x17 is 34  but generally ewe should get pregnant first time  (34 days is a drawn out lambing)  I use teaser so 21 days is long enough (odd one not pregnant gets outed) .
