Looking for a little bit of yellow fleece...
« on: September 14, 2016, 10:54:58 am »
I'm making a wall hanging to put up now I've gotten my hallway painted (tartan/stags head) and need a little bit of fleece that's yellow to let me make a sheet of yellow and white marvled felt...
I have merino fleece in every colour, except yellow  ::) but have lots of white fleece.
Can I colour it using turmeric or anything else I'm likely to have in the house?
Or does anyone have a little they would be happy to spare?  I'll pay for it or post you a present in return  :)
Thanks in advance  :-*

The usual thing to use is onion skins, which give various shades of yellow depending on how much you use.

You can use turmeric, but you'll need to experiment to get the exact colour you want.  Don't forget that turmeric stains everything a brilliant yellow - fingers, pots, anything it drips on.....

Turmeric dye takes very well but it is a bright yellow. Maybe if it ends up too bright you could blend with a bit of white.

If all else fails let me know. I am sure there must be some yellow in my stash somewhere.

Thanks both  :)
I have some turmeric dying a small sample as I type. Bright yellow would be ok - my hallway is fairly bright and the tartan is fairly muted - bright might be better? But great tip about mixing it with the undyed stuff if I need to tone it down
I'll post a photo once it's done - as long as it turns out ok  ;)

A quick update....
The fibre dyed with turmeric turned out great and is all ready to work with. I've not resized the photo yet to let me share it on TAS but will soon, promise  :)
