Coughing up Phlem
« on: May 25, 2010, 07:07:25 pm »
I noticed this afternoon that one of my Black Rocks is coughing up phlem & wheezing.

One of the Calders is wheezing but not phlem.

Croad is coughing up phlem but no wheezing.

Anyways, phoned the vet in Milnathort & made an appointment for tomorrow after a brief chat with them.

He thinks it looks like Mycoplasma & he wants to innoculate the rock & give us some injections for the rest of the flock, including the wee Croad, who i think was the culprit as there were no symptoms before she arrived. I'll ask him if it might be better to prescribe soluble instead seeing i'll have to treat all of them.

She had been kept apart from the others, but all the girls were socialising in the cabbages yesterday & drinking out the same puddle.

A phone call to the breeder we got her from might be in order as well

Is there a way of testing the croad? so you can tell the breeder its definitely from her?

I dunno how i could test the croad without taking her to the vet as well, i'll ask when i'm there & see what they say.

All the layers were fine until she appeared, but i suppose it's the chance you take bringing other birds in from another source.

Even Rosemary heard the rock coughing when we were chatting on the phone tonight.

I'll update in the morning when we get home again.

hope it gets better. if one in the flock has an infectious bug then i would just treat them all. i don't see why the vet would want to see your hen he has diagnosed it in one they should just supply the meds. its one reason i only buy eggs in. theres too many risks buying in. have you cleaned and disinfected there coop it may help a bit.

Aye Paul, i've just finished doing it .... a good scrub out with Jeyes followed by a good soaking with Poultry shield.

Cleaned their feeder & drinker out as well.

Well, the vet injected her with 0.4ml of Baytril 2.5% & said not to bother treating the rest of the flock unless they start coughing up phlem, but told us to keep the poorly hen segregated for another 48hrs.

Thought this was kinda strange, but that's his job, not mine.

He also said that it's not uncommon for birds to get infections like this after worming. Anyone else heard of this ?

She seems a lot better already & is moving around in her carrier, where last night just sat in there. I'll let her out in a bit & try to get some food & water into her, let her stretch her legs etc.

All in all, seems she seems to be on the mend & i'm £14 lighter, which i'm certainly not complaining about.

Anyways, better get on with building a temp run out of strawberry netting   :-\

good luck. it maybe like in humans its stripped the gut of its own protection and leaves them open.

Back to the vets again for soluble antibiotics today.

Two of my Calders have started coughing & croaking, they're off their feed as well which is not like them ....  normally straight to the feeder first thing in the morning.

At least we'll get this ironed out once & for all.

UPDATE

I now have a bottle of Baytril soluble to add to their water & a 28 day withdrawl from selling their eggs.

Roll on July   ::)

Hi there just another thought to add to all your ideas/advice.  I had somethin similar when I got my 3 hens. THey'd all been wormed prior to me getting them.  I rewormed them and the breeder dropped round 'Tylan' which I used and gradually they all came round.  May help if all else fails? Good luck!

Tylan & Baytril are both antibiotics for the treatment of chest complaints ..... or so i was told by my vet.

Trouble is, you can't buy it off the shelf in the UK, you need a vet's prescription, or does someone know where i can get it without a script.

All my layers are fine now, eating, drinking & destroying my cabbages   :D

Pity about my wee Leghorn chick that's coughing, sneezing & has no energy   ???

Hi, am just new to the site and have the same problem with coughing/sneezing poultry. I notice you mention Tylan and wonder what doseage you use? Thanks
