Dog Roses are White this Year...?
« on: June 30, 2016, 09:55:59 am »
As the title says - we have many in the field hedges and this year they're not pink but white.  Cold weather maybe? The ones in the garden are all the "right" colours.

I don't think it can be temp or rainfall, as up here there is always a range from light pink to white.  I assumed the colour depended on the particular bush, some lighter, some darker, but clearly I'm not observant enough.  Lets see what others have to say.

Ours range from white to nearly red.  The dark ones are darker than I have seen them in previous years.  There do seem to be more dog roses about this year for some reason though. A bumper crop of haws are on the way too.

Ours are white to a pale and bright pink colour, mostly pink. Why are they called dog roses anyway, when they're actually Rosehip flowers?

Dog roses are very variable, but I've noticed a lot more field rose (Rosa arvensis) this year, and that is white. Perhaps the latter do like this weather more?

As for the 'dog' part, the root was once believed to be a cure for the bite of a mad dog! As way-back-when-they-didn't-know-any-better cures go, I guess it could be worse!  ;)

Cold - one of my neighbours jested he was looking forward to Christmas!  I've issued blankets to the family and poults and chicks that would normally have been transferred to protected quarters outside are stacking up in the hatch room.  The dog roses I'm seeing are plants that have always produced pink flowers in previous years.
