I think raspberries will grow anywhere.  I don't think they would stay within the confines of a raised bed as they spread sideways

Yes, but keeping them contained is always a challenge, raised or not!  Fine by me cos I love rasps and let them spread within reason, but I've got to cut tracks to get in and pick them after a while!!

I have rasps and tayberries in a raised bed - they've outgrown it in 2 years so i'm having to move them, and they aren't fruiting well becasue of them being crammed

I've had the same. In the end, the ones in the bed were hardly producing any fruit so I cut them all down and planted some canes I was given, which all died. I'm getting the bed a bit deeper and try again next year.

I suppose they are quite hungry feeders, having to make new full stems every year, & leaves & fruit.
I wonder if top dressing with rotted manure or compost every year would help?

Thanks for your thoughts folks. Possum  the problem is that the land is very weedy and we can't keep up with seeing between the canes. Strawberries will be going into raised beds next time
