Has anyone bred a ewe again who had a c-section?
« on: June 22, 2016, 08:30:04 pm »
Well long story short I have a Beltex X Jacob ewe who this year had to have a c-section she was only a ewe lamb an shouldn't of been tupped. She got with the ram for about 12 hours which was a large texel ram.

C-section was due to huge lamb small ewe so on.

My question is has anyone re-bred a ewe who has a c-section and what were the results?

I've never heard of a C-section ewe being bred from again, in this area.

Yes I have. She was a Ryeland - had a massive ram lamb as a yearling. No problem at all with subsequent pregnancies and she went on to win best of breed as a 3 year old  at York Rare Breed Show.

We had a gimmer that had a C section; we put her back to the tup the folowing autumn, but she didn't get in lamb.

Personally, I'd give her another go..

It was due to my poor management that she had problems I believe. Also the scanner scanned get empty if she had scanned in lamb I would off made sure she didn't get any feed but as she scanned empty she got her fair share....if I was to try does anyone thing a small tup will be a better option?

Yes I bred from a ewe after a C section, biggest mistake I ever made I thought I would give her another chance, until it happened again! After that I culled her and her offspring, since then any which have had to be C sectioned have gone. The problem with having an animal C sectioned is that it weakens the womb wall, I think with sheep (as with any animal) it is 3 C sections, personally if one hs one once cull out the ewe and begin again.

I haven't bred a ewe after a C section.  My vet advises me not to breed from the ewe again, so I don't risk it.

Not exactly the same but I successfully bred again from a goat that had a section, she like yours got bred accidentally and vet said she'd more growing to do so no reason not to try again....although it was the most nerve racking experience when I knew she was in labour and I ended up phoning the vets to check there was one ready in case I had to rush her down  ::)

So if it was more due to small ewe and incorrect feed management then I'd say try again

I would say in this situation she would be ok , only had 4 c sections in total and culled all because they all  could  not lamb even with assistance when fully grown

Was definalty poor management on my behalf an she's grown a lot since she had the c-section so I'm hoping she will be ok. Gonna put her to a smaller breed of ram to be sure

We had a Texel shearing with a big single lamb to a Texel tup had a c section.  Put her to a Lleyn tup next year, lambed herself fine, had twins last year to a texel tup and everything was fine, but she was barren this year for some reason. So I'd give her another chance too.
