WTD: goats in aberdeenshire, young, old, male or female
« on: May 22, 2016, 09:56:06 am »
Looking for some goats to take care of an area of rough land.

Ideally looking for a breed that could be used for milk, meat or both.

Not fussed about rare or pure breed, just looking for reasonably priced animals.

As per subject not too fussed about sex or age.

Reasonably priced? Not sure really. Have seen some female saanen kids going for £70 each, and some female pygmy kids going for 250. It'd be at the lower end of that scale that I'd consider.

The price of goats always surprises me. Considering how comparatively little you can pickup weaners and lambs for.

Well unlike pigs goats only tend to have 2 offspring for a start. They are also more expensive to feed than sheep. If people don't keep their own billy goat they have to pay a £40 service fee to get them mated. Then there is the cost of disbudding (currently about £60 a time with my vet).
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

I'm not questioning the prices I just said that it surprises me.

As per my post I've seen a few kids going for the £70 mark but they are either quite far away or have already sold. Just looking for something closer to home.

I have just bottle fed 3 kids, and taking into account milk, feed and hay, worming and jabs, I sell my females for £130 each. More if registered,
