I think we are going to have goslings!
« on: March 29, 2016, 04:51:47 pm »
Our pair of Brecon Buffs started laying a couple of weeks ago.  Looked at all the books but clearly our geese have never read them!  She makes a wonderful nest with as much straw as I put in the shed (it is about 9 inches high and growing steadily!). She lays an egg every other day or so - we are up to 10 now - then covers everything carefully with more straw and off they both go to graze round the garden until we round them up in the evening.

I am given to understand that a clutch of a dozen or so would be normal, but seems you just have to wait until she decides she has laid enough and starts sitting - and that hasn't happened yet.

We are not planning to intervene, just let them get on with it, but should we think about crumbs as and when they hatch?  They are fed on layers pellets now, with whole wheat germ and all the grass (and flowers or whatever else takes their fancy) around the garden.

Any suggestions or help much appreciated.  They are a very independent pair, he is all hiss but no real bottle unless you turn and run.  That is the mistake the dog makes, whereupon she gets chased back inside then house and runs to hide under the kitchen table!! Gander then wanders back with a cackle and a big smug grin and continues to feed.

Good luck!

My geese haven't been very successful with hatching eggs, but when I did get a couple, I let them graze freerange and offered corn, but being the middle of summer, they all seemed happy with the grass.

Just ensure that grass for goslings is not too long.
