molly has had a cough now for a while, it mostly comes when she has a run around the place and
sometimes just when she is still, but as said when she runs with milly.
what do i need to do?
poor molly she just seems to be getting the rough end of the stick.
milly bless her has'nt had a complain since she has arrived.
any help as you guys know, will be app

Langdon .....not another ailment for your goat, surely?

Have you wormed them .....I am sure you have? Is the hay dusty at all? or it may well be due to all the dry weather we have had recently.

Should the title be Mollys cough - its her that you always seem to have a worry about?

ya sorry its molly.
goats got wormed on the 24/2/10.
previous worming was on the 18/12/09.
as said she has been coughing like this since thet arrived.

just sitting at table and looking out the window,
when cars go past the goat area they leave a cloud of dust behind,
do you think this could cause a goat to cough?
just trying to find other answers to mollys cough as she has been wormed twice since been with us.

what is this fluke thing with regarding goats,
does normal worming treat this thing or is it a treatment in its self?

You will need a specific wormer for fluke, Fasimex is used for sheep (fluke only). But only use it if you need it, the vet should be able to give you a syringe full, as it is sold in huge bottles. Its given as a drench.

Are Milly and Molly sisters an dhave been brought up together so far? If its only one that is coughing it might just be that she is more sensitive, and dusty hay/allergy could well be the cause. If your goat house would be damp then both of them would be coughing, so not sure what that could be.

Fluke affects certain parts of the country more - caused by snails, I think. There would be other symtoms besides a cough, such as lethargic, poor condition, not eating etc. Sheep seem more prone to it. I can't see your goat having that, but I think the vet can test for it if need be.
It affects the liver.

I have never seen a goat with it, but yes, they can get it. I would not worry about that being the cause of the cough though.

I have seen goats with it, and they can show symptoms quite suddenly. We only learnt about Fluke after moving here, and we nearly lost a pregnant Anglo-Nubian to it, but managed to save her (and one of her kids which she had 2 weeks early). However, Langdon it is caused by snails, and you just won't get them on gravel- they like lots of soggy wet ground with grass.

I don't think you will need to dose for it Langdon. But it can creep up on you if you aren't aware of it and have your goats on damp ground. We have to dose twice a year now.

I know this is a wild card, but - it's not her heart is it? A cough in dogs (and humans I believe) can mean a heart problem like a leaky heart valve.

isnt it funny how one is as healthy as could be and the other has these complains.
everyone on ere must think that i make up these complaints about her!

Of course not, Langdon. You care as we all do on here. I hope it isn't her heart, as I said it was along shot. Probably something simple.

Try not to worry Langdon, you do love your goats and because you spend so much time with them you pick up on these worries (same as I do - I panic over every little thing!)
I know with nursing humans a cough can indicate cardiac problems but as the others have said it can just as easily be dust from hay or something. maybe get the vet to have a look put your mind at rest.

funny that both of us are looking after animals now, i used to be an auxillary nurse for three 3yrs in a community
hospital and a care worker in a number of care homes.
i nearly went on to do my nurse training.
allthough im sure i will never go back to caring, i do have fond memories it was nice to be able to do something
for the older generation.

That is a coincidence! I enjoyed nursing (I specialised in Gynae and was sister of a ward until my 2nd daughter came along then became district nurse until I had my 3rd!)
there's something lovely about caring for animals after having done so for humans I think - frustrating that they can't tell you whats wrong but at the same time an unspoken love and gratitude back from them. can't quite put my finger on it! I am still sole carer for a very disabled mum (MS) she lives downstairs in our house so I think the animals are my solace and great stress relief (most of the time when they are not ill!).

i find a smallholding is something special, the other day i felt like i was a child again in
my own playground only this time it has mud, dirt, smell and what have you!
i started to feed the girls on that speedibeet, hope it sorts them out and i made another hay feeder for them.
