Hay nets for goats
« on: February 24, 2016, 09:28:17 am »
Would welcome an opinion...

I use hay racks for my Angora goats but one goat, Percy, is a bit fragile so from time to time could do with a separate place to eat.  Not practical to put up anything permanent but does anyone use use hay nets or something else temporary?  I've always been concerned regarding horns getting stuck so never use them with the goats.

I use the hook on hay racks from MTL fabrications in Yorkshire. They are great value and the delivery cost is reasonable. They go over hurdles or gates and I use quite a few of them.

I wouldn't advise hay nets.  Also the MTL Fabrication racks are very good and very good value - but site low enough that the goats don't stand up and then get their feet caught in the tapered gap in the corners - I had to destroy a male kid last year as he got his foot trapped and was hanging from it.  I have told MTL fabrications about this and they offered me a full refund.  I declined as I will be careful about which stock I use them for  - i.e. not kids / small goats.

I can't see them on their web site. Perhaps they stopped doing them after your problem?

Haynets only ever used for adult ponies here and tied high.   Never used them for other animals in case they get caught.   What about a big ol lucky bucket and stuff it with hay for him, or a metal pannier rack  either hung up or stuff it and put it up side down no floor.

Agree with Helly no hay nets , not worth the risk. Use a proper hay feeder  :goat:

We brought a poorly sheep into the barn a few weeks ago and gave her a hay net. I thought she would be ok as she didn't have horns.

However, when I went to check on her before bedtime, she had caught her button eartag on the netting. Thankfully she was quite a dosile old girl, so just stood still rather than panicking and tearing her ear. However, I've now given our haynet away to a horsey friend, and will only use fixed racks for our sheep from now on.

Thanks all.  I was reluctant to put another fixing in a fairly small goat shelter but the hang over one with the cover would do the job if I put it on the back of the door.  Thanks for sending the link Clydeshopper, my little brain was not properly in gear.  An Order will be placed.

Thanks everyone, I've gone for a MTL rack. Sorry I was too dim to find the website first off. The hay bags also look useful Nutterly, might get one for shows.
Percy is still in a pickle. Hopefully it is 'just' worms I was going to do him in a couple of weeks but this does seem likeliest cause.

On a brighter note we have out first Angora kids 2 boys, 2 girls.

Saw a cut down section of metal sheep hurdle  staked across a corner for a goat hay feeder recently .
It didn't seem to upset the goat nor did it as far as I know get it's horns tangled as being well staked it did not move so the goat was able to extract its head if needed .
