solar fence for poultry
« on: February 21, 2016, 11:02:17 am »
Hi all

We're looking to get some chickens this spring and am looking to assemble a 50m solar charged electric fence without having to go to the expensive kit retailers - does anyone have any advice on sourcing panel, charger and battery? Fence advice would be good too though I seem to find pricing very similar across websites etc

Fences are pretty much the same. I like the Mole Valley ones if you mean electric net. They have double spikes on the feet at a decent price. My advice would be to put a wooden post at each corner to tie back to if it's going to be in a permanent location and you will need a sturdy plastic corner post as the supplied ones will bend. You can alternatively lash a plastic fence post to the existing with cable ties. Then you will need to stop the grass shorting the net. A good idea is Damp Proof Course under the net and I always disconnect the bottom 2 lines as they short too easily.  Batteries, I like Numax Leisure range, 100ah minimum. Energisers, the Mole Valley range are good or get a good one second hand. Go for bigger than you will need.
