A very lucky hen!
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:00:41 am »
I think it was last Tuesday night, that I noticed there was a bantam missing, and also one hen. Although I have a lot, I have an idea how many go in each shed every night!!  Searched everywhere, even on the lane.  Gave up, and decided the fox had taken them.  Next morning, bantam appeared out of a different shed from where she lives, but no hen.

Tonight, I was in the little yard putting the pony and pet sheep in the stable.  I have some logs stacked by the wall there.  And as I walked past, I noticed a hi fi horse feed sack under the logs move.  Rather odd, and worried it was a rat in there ....I called my OH to come and look in the sack.  I stood at the other side of the wall in case the rat jumped out. He opened the sack, and said OMG.  What? said I. OMG he said look at this hen.  I then asked a very stupid question of "is it dead?" - because I had just seen the sack move!

Out of the sack tumbled a very wet, bedraggled hen.  It was wet because the only air there was, was a little corner of the sack where the logs were not on it.  It has been in there since Tuesday, without food or water.  The first thing it did was run to the water container and have a long drink, then off to the feed and tucked in.  It must have gone in the empty sack, then I had stacked the logs there, and not seen it.  I have passed that sack twice, if not three times a day on my way to the pony.  Thank goodness it had the energy to move, and attracted my attention. I am sure it could not have lasted much longer.

Do hens have nine lives???!!!

Well that one only has 8 lives left. Well done on finding her, what a lucky discovery, as I read I was expecting there to be a nest found.

I can stand creepy crawlies, can pick spiders up etc. Can cope with mice, but the mere thought of rats .......sends a shudder down my spine.
