I overwintered some garlic and onions. they've come up lovely!! they went in about oct/nov (I think!!) roughly when will they be ready and what should I be doing/looking out for between then and now?

When there is a good show of spikes and they start to turn colour to yellowish I have sneaky look at the bulbs to see how big they are and put the soil back if they aren't big enough.  As you can gather I'm not very good at veggie growing either.  OH used to do veg and make a huge success of it while I went to the office, so now I'm having a  go at it.

Difficult to be specific about when but Doganjo is correct about leaf colour and about digging up one of the garlic plants to check. Depending on weather/sunshine should be about June/July. With the onions you should be able to see the bulbs as they get larger as they should sit near the top of the soil. When the leaves start to turn brown bend the stalk over at the neck and let the sun get at the bulbs to firm up. Hope this helps.

I harvest mine usually when the leaves have gone dry - this way they are prone to be overlooked somewhere - ready for next year
