Smallholding/House sit West wales

Hi, having advertised a house sit on the main house-sitting website in the UK, chosen a couple who were apparently most keen to learn lots and who claimed previous small holding experience, assured us of their reliability and encouraged us to go ahead and book flights for a long dreamed of (and saved for) trip, 4 days after the booking of the flights, pulled out, stating that there was too much to do here! (hands on animal care here usually takes under an hour a day). The sit is for 5 weeks from July 20th to August 25th. The farm is over 400 years old, beautiful, peaceful, feels remote yet 5 minutes drive from a market town. The dogs walk themselves, the sheep, goats and pigs are very low maintenance. Sauna, salad, eggs etc, internet, Sky TV, natural spring water, a plethora of birds, lovely views, no neighbours in site. 10 miles from stunning beaches. Any advice or interest greatly appreciated......would ideally suit mature couple.

Fingers crossed for you .... why are people such a let down.

We are currently scouring friends and relations to cover our place for the 3 weeks we are in Tanzania (but there are some we are not asking as we know they will say yes but probably let us down at the last minute) . We have got a non resident farm sitter  as back up and who can deal with any livestock issues that the sitter would be unable to deal with. We have one week covered so far.

What a terrible letdown.
But having used housesitters ourselves via the web for many years now I would say don't be discouraged by this one very unlucky choice. If you can't find anybody suitable/available  among friends & relatives I would try the websites again (personally I have found the best people on mindmyhouse).
I'd say it's crucial to try and read between the lines of what potential candidates say - people want (or imagine they want) to spend time at a remote smallholding for different reasons and you need to identify people that are like you as much as possible as they are the most likely to appreciate your place and your animals in a similar way to yourself.
You still have a long way til the end of July, don't panic, just keep looking. There are good people out there.  :fc:

It sounds brilliant, just a pity my farm will be all hands on from now till Dec. Have you tried smallholders groups on Facebook?

Have you considered asking the leader of the local Young Farmer's group?  They'd probably know which would be a steady pair of hands that wouldn't hold open house every Saturday night.
