Anyone Upgraded to Windows 10?
« on: January 19, 2016, 09:03:41 am »
Keep getting prompt boxes popping up on the screen about this, but remember too well the cursing and spitting that went on when we upgraded to Windows 8 - it was as though someone had been rifling through my sock drawer and paired them up in the wrong order.

I have, and it was painless.

*But* my Windows PC is a second computer and not used for much more than testing websites and playing the occasional game of Civilization.

I'd think most of the issues have been ironed out by now, although you do have until 29th July to do the free upgrade.

I did ...briefly!

All seemed fine until my mouse pad stopped working (apparently its a common issue with the upgrade)
Tried downloading new drivers etc but in the end found it easier to uninstall and go back to Windows 8
Plus our download/upload speed is dismal and it literally took hours to install the first time so its one of those things that I'll get round to when I have no need for my laptop for hours on end  :-\

OH upgraded and wished he hadn't.

There were real problems with his printer as it isn't now supported by windows 10.

I also used the same printer (from a different room) and that wouldn't work either once he had switched over.
So now I have my own printer.

I've done three, only two successfully.  The unsuccessful one was the older of the three machines and the matching video driver wasn't available so I had to roll that one back.

Brand new Dell alienware pc/gaming computer alpha console in November.
Microsoft jigsaw was having trouble so upgraded to 10.
Then multiple things started having trouble and I got fed up, so rolled back to 8.1
Then started getting blue screens of death, and support software couldn't figure out the partitions, sounded like something corrupted. So used the recovery media that came with the machine to format hard drive, but can't reinstall Windows now cos it says there is a file missing or corrupt and keeps going to blue screen of death.
Tech support says call between 8 and 8 Mon to Fri, but before 7 pm last night the office dealing with alienware had up a voice message that they were now closed!

I read somewhere that Microsoft have built in all sorts of new information gathering features to windows 10. I think we're under enough surveillance already to be honest.

I have been runnin 10 for a few months now. The upgrade was painless and I have had no problems since; in fact it seems faster than the XP I upgraded from.

Yes, you defo want to turn all those off.  It's a step in the upgrade customisation, you have to click on the advanced button i think, where you can turn all the data gathering off.

start:settings:privacy and plod your way through. I think i have everything off and a bandaid over the camera/mike. Also be aware that MS often switch some of it on automatically after their updates. Some of the web browsers also store info and many of the toolbars you get offered pay for themselves by harvesting info.

Yes on one of my computers, I think it may have corrupted it though and I can't change back :'( looking on the bright side I am replacing it soon, thankfully. I do have other computers thankfully which I didn't upgrade, although I upgraded my laptop and it works fine. i think it may be as time goes on and Microsoft work on it more it may be better, however my first computer was upgraded when it was first out. I would stick to windows 7 much better in my opinion. Never liked windows 8 that much and windows 10 even less. It completely ruined my windows phone  odly enough they invented Bing, the worst search engine and translated of languages ever

I went 7 to 10 on a Lenovo ThinkPad and the only issue was that I had to update the drivers for the sound card, it's worked absolutely fine, and I've barely noticed a difference between the two operating systems.
