What Next? .....a bit more help please
« on: January 15, 2016, 08:38:06 am »
Hi All
We have brought a place in Suffolk, I have now got my CPH number I am in the process of getting herd numbers (cattle and pigs) do I need to inform or do anything else? I keep reading different acranims for different government departments but then they seem to have changed, would just like to do things right. I have sorted out insurance. Any help will be very gratefully received, thank you x

If you intend to keep sheep you need a flock number.  If you keep more than 50 chickens you should register.

Register with the local agri-vet
Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

You need to inform the Animal and Plant Health Agency that you have sheep and they will issue you with a flock number. You can also ask them to register you as a poultry keeper (as pointed out above, compulsory if you have 50 or more poultry birds). Your regional office is Bury St Edmunds but they have recently changed to a centralised telephone number 03000 200 301 (Defra Rural Services Helpline which comes under the ambit of APHA). If you phone them you will find them very helpful.
