Herd / Flock numbers?
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:35:27 pm »
Hi,
Living in Scotland where we have a CPH number for our smallholding.  Am a little confused about herd numbers for sheep and pigs.  We have sheep now, our tags have the CPH number and a further number that increments by 1 for each new tag.  We have used these on the sheep.  Next up will be some pigs, does anyone know if we use the same tags or do we need to get a 'herd' number and some new tags?

You get a different number for your pigs and the tagging rules are totally different than those for sheep.
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

In the Holding Register the previous owners have listed their pigs as well as their sheep, when the pigs arrived they were added to the total stock on the holding and likewise shown in the same register when moved off.  The register mentions that it is for sheep and goats so I am confused as to whether we should have separate tags and register for the pigs.

Call your local animal health, tell them you want to keep pigs.
You will get a totally different herd number for your pigs and lots of information on how tagging, movements etc should be done. You will have to register on Scoteid for movements once you have your herd no.

You should have seperate registers. Your tags won't (shouldn't) have your CPH on them, they will have your flock number foe sheep, or your herd number for pigs, meaning that you do need different tags for sheep and pigs. You would probably want different styles anyway.

You should have a holding number ... Used on all movement docs.   And a flock number used on sheep tags.  And a herd number for pigs

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

.....and a card index to keep note of all the different numbers (and then there's the Single Business Identifier and the Government Gateway number and password and your herd and flock breed society membership numbers and passwords and your VAT registration number and password and .....).

Looks like the previous owners did it differently but we'll call Dumfries to sort it out, thanks for the advice.
