Picture this in your minds eye..... Sunset on the Mediterranean, the sun slowly sinking, an orange disc sinking beneath the deep blue waters; a martini in one hand, the last drop slowly trickling down your throat, a pleasent feeling. Peace and serenity, only the night owls and the crickets for company, their calls relaxing like soft music to the ears. Heading off the balcony and into the hotel room, a lovely contrast between the cool night air and the warmth of central heating. You head back out onto the balcony and sit in a chair watching the stars slowly appear in the night sky, shining so brightly overhead, so calm and peaceful, perhaps too peaceful. Shouldn't this be what the perfect holiday is like? Comment below what you think would be the perfect holiday, remember this is only part of the perfect holiday (for me anyway.)

I'd hate that WBF     

High on a grassy hillside in the wilds of Scotland, on a warm summer's day.  Hills around, loch behind, shore and empty golden beach, blue sea beyond.  Lying on the grass, back against a mossy boulder with a gentle breeze blowing through my hair.  Not a stranger nor pylon nor wind turbine within sight, fresh caught trout for dinner cooked on a stick over the fire.  All three generations of my menfolk out playing on the loch in sailing dingies, dogs at my feet.  Now that's bliss for me

That sounds just like my ideal holiday FW but for one thing. No menfolk, just the dogs at my feet. (then I wouldn't have to do any cooking, I could catch my own trout!!)

How about:
a few days - or even a week without any rain - and maybe even some sun; fields that can be entered without sinking in... ah I'm dreaming again.

Well of course they are - that and carrying my backpack    There's something about bonfires that makes men have to cook on them.  Maybe they just love getting smoke in their eyes.

Forget the Med. My perfect holiday would be on the Isle of Arran, in Lochranza - the village I lived in for eleven years - walking along the Newton shore with red deer on the hills behind me and seals basking on the rocks in the sea. Maybe a porpoise or two leaping out of the water.


Reality check: I could manage the holiday on Arran, possibly in Lochranza if  there are any holiday cottages left, but the walking would happen these days. I have memories though.
