It is sad to hear over the last 24 hours of the unfolding of what looks like the worst offshore disaster since Piper Alpha.

It is odd that there seems to be no mention of it on the BBC website.

The second link I got by doing a search for Guneshli on the BBC website - but as you say, not a single word about it on the BBC site itself.

Thanks for those links Sally.  My internet connection is too slow to be doing clever things like that - due to being on a rig looking out at weather at least as bad as in the Caspian.

I guess it is the advantage of social media but by 6am this morning everyone onboard here knew about this incident and the other one (part of an accommodation unit collapsed killing at least 2).

Aye, I have been working on drilling rigs for 13 years (boy that makes me feel old!).  It is not my dream job but without it we would have struggled to be able to buy our land.

I guess it is human nature but you don't worry about the risks until you see or hear of something going wrong.  Had to watch a safety video yesterday about a guy who mangled his hand, only when it started did I realise that I had worked with him less than a year ago.

Things (in the North Sea) are a lot safer than they were even 15 years ago due to tighter legislation and changing attitudes.  I am glad I was not working pre 1990!

We all moan about health and safety but I'd rather be where we are now than even thirty years ago. My first husband was firefighter and when he started, the old guys said wearing breathig apparatus was for wimps. "Eat smoke, laddie".
