I've been making sausages today and had all sorts of trouble with my dry skins. Are they one size fits all like condoms or do they come in different sizes?


I just couldnt seem to slide the skin far enough onto the sausage nozzle to make any reasonable progress. In the end I took to making 5 bangers at a time with short lengths.


Any advice on the whole sliding the skin on palava?

Are they wet enough?


There are (at least) two sizes I think, sheep casings and hog casings.  The sheep being the smaller and the hog being the larger.

  I knew you would know. The you tube demo that the manufacturer has on line uses them dry and made it look easy but there were two of them at it. The husband was shoving it in at one end and his wife was holding the skin back and feeding it through.


I realise that I was doing it by myself and the video did say that its better with two but wet skins may indeed be the answer if you are planning to do it alone.

I just meant that they are made to accommodate different sized...objects. At school, in health ed we once had to put one on a banana and I had a bit of trouble then as I recall, but a boy at the back of the class managed to put his whole head in one!.......shortly before being sent to the Headmasters office..... Returning to my original thread....I'm thinking of trying hog skins as I understand that they accommodate size fluctuations without splitting.

I have some of these in the fridge ready for use this weekend.

They are a bit more expensive, being already spooled but worked well for me last time.

I prefer the sheep casings; I find the hog casings a bit tough.  The ready spooled ones are ace though, so much easier!
