Interested in keeping pigs
« on: May 29, 2008, 09:58:42 pm »
Hi All,

I have a strong interest in keeping pigs and I've been doing a bit of research, however i have a pretty major stumbling block in that I have nowhere to keep pigs!  I live on a housing estate in Northamptonshire and I don't think my garden is goign to be big enough(!) so has anyone got any suggestions?

If I'm being stupid please let me know, but I'm sure someone else has started like this and I'm very interested to hear where you found your pigs land.

Thanks very much.

Hi Rob, only suggestion I can make is to ask the council if they have any derelict land you could use.

Do you know anyone with a small piece of land who might be interested in keeping pigs with you? In return for use of his land you could do all the husbandry.

Ok, I've possibly found a piece of land but it would be in the same field as horses.  Obviously I would fence the pigs off so that they have there own part of the field but would the horses cause any problems?

Thanks again.

Wont be any problem for the pigs.  I dont know if its still there but on www.pigsinfrance. there was a whole thread on a sanglier piglet that had either been orphaned or separated from her family, who grew up with horses on a farm (the piglet was wild) and who has now given birth herself to a litter, still protected by the horses (and their owner).

Either way, dont let the horses get anywhere near the pig food if its a proprietary one, as it is dangerous to horses.

So glad you have found some land.  A bonus will be that the horse owners will be able to keep their eye on your pigs and vice versa.

Now all you have to decide is what breed.
