Could they have had a scare from something?

Well if they've just gone through their moult, that's probably why. Chickens use up a lot of protein growing feathers back, so it's either eggs or feathers. Although I have to say, it's a bit early (or late) for them to moult.

Is it possible they have a nest outside the hen coop?  Quite often one lays there a few days, and then another discovers it, and starts ......last weekend I spotted a hen going into a builders sack we have, full of haylage......I had a look and there was 6 eggs!!  Some of our hens lay in the barn, and all sorts of peculiar places, and quite often its only because I see them coming back that I discover their secret place!!

AN - front half of Anne
JO - rear half of John

Has been my email address since time the internet began, I was going to say immemorial, but although it seems the net has been going that long it is only about 20 years or so ;D

I suspect something outside their coop frightened them into a flapping frenzy and they knocked the nest box down themselves.  Mine is down low for that reason.  I think they will be fine, possibly tomorrow, but it may take a day or two for them to get back in lay.

You don't sound funny ....quite sensible really.  Cannot knock Irish men, as my Dad was one. Although over here many years, he never lost that lovely accent.

Doganjo - I have been meaning to ask about  your name. Obviously could see the dog connection, and now you have said, it all clicks into place!!

Ah right so they've grown all their feathers back? Might just be the stress then.
