One of our hay meadows runs up to a railway, but on our side is an old railway sidings. Closed about 40 years ago. Only used by railway vehicles accessing the railway, now full of trees. These trees are overshadowing the field, and the bottom half of the hay never gets much sunlight, so takes ages to dry - it never used to be like that before the trees took over.
Every time contractors came to cut back the trees, they never did the ones in front of this hay meadow. Yesterday, I noticed workmen further along, not just trimming the trees, but cutting down completely (a bit worrying this, just wondering if they are widening the railway or something)
I went over to ask the workmen if there was any chance they may be cutting down the trees near our field, and explained why. Yes, they were told to do the lot!!
So, hopefully we will see a big difference in the summer.
I don't like cutting trees down, but in this case, when its affecting my hay, then yes, its ok!! Only thing is, I go up the embankment in the summer and collect hazel branches for the goats, and now they will be rather thin on the ground!!!
I have been getting a lot of branches from the chopped trees, for our coal fire, and the men said to help myself if I want any chippings, as the big machine has been along doing it.
