Paperbacks or E books?
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:08:55 am »
Heya guys.
I have been trying to find a paperback version of this book http://books.simonandschuster.co.uk/The-Terracotta-Madonna/Isabella-Dusi/9781471135187
Sadly they do not sell it in book version only as a kindle or an E book. I do sort of understand why, because a lot of people don't read proper paperbacks anymore, which is sad, but what about the people who like to have the book on their shelf, without having to pick up their Amazon kindle? Why can't they publish it for both? OK rant over now, am just rather angry. I have been waiting to read her latest book, as I have her two previous books which I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I wanted to add her third to the collection.   :'(

For people with muscle conditions and pain, like me a kindle is a far better option that an 'proper' book.  Very lightweight, books readily available to download whenever you're near a hotspot, no page turning, no need to worry about spilling coffee on a page and missing part of the story, and loads of totally free books available

I agree, but I still miss good old fashioned reading. I plan to build a library whenever I move house and I will have tons of books, fiction eg Agatha Christie, travel books type journals, gardening, history and vetinary books, not to mention shed loads of recipe books :)

I am a die hard bookworm, and LOVE a good book - either brand new or an oldie, but I celebrate my kindle because without it, I would be several thousand Łk in debt with my book habit, even using libraries and carboots :D I regularly add 20-25 kindle books without paying a penny :)

Since I got my kindle I have much more room on my shelves for proper reference books, and all those lovely hardbacks that you go back to again and again.  The charity shops really benefitted from all my chuck-out paperbacks.  I throw them out only if I've read them twice, several years apart so I've forgotten who dunnit  :tired:
Kindles are great for leisure reading - lightweight and fit in a pocket, but you can't look at diagrams or illustrations on them.

WBF - I wonder if the book you are looking for was specially written for kindle?  Many are, as a way of the author attracting attention to their existence.  The 'for kindle' e-books are often sold very cheaply or are free, then the next normal book costs the usual amount.

Ooh, what a useful head's up! I loved her first two books and hadn't yet heard about a new one! Thank you ;D

...The down-side to hearing it's an eBook is that having finally taken the plunge and forked out my hard-earned cash for a Kindle recently, mine, typically, seemed to have all of the bugs and glitches possible so had to go back (after a mammoth email/phone trail in amongst dealing with a family loss so all very distressing). In the 2 days it decided it was going to 'play' I was disappointed to find that any art (similarly only available as eBooks, oddly!) or reference type books did not display at all well, though it was great for downloading more visually basic and wordy books from the library. I'm a complete bibliophile and that will never change, but I was looking forward to downloadable versions...

...I guess it would be nice, in this instance, to have the choice.

I read my kindle in bed every night for at least an hour, three and a half years,  and never had sore eyes yet - it's nothing fancy just a plain old original kindle, no keyboard, no backlight,no special screen. And so lightweight i don't get sore arms either when I'm lying flat.

One of the sheep books I have (blueish cover in hardback with a speckley mule head, cannot think of the author for the life of me) translated very well to my kindle app (and kindle) so might be useful one day - is not quite the same as a proper book but perfectly legible diagrams and info on my phone which is always with me so a pretty decent reference out in the field :)

I have a kindle but I have to say I love paperback. I'm that bad today I went to Abergavenny and collected 160 books.   I wouldn't like to guess how many books I have..

My son, bless him gave me a kindle last Christmas and I do use it but, I far prefer a "proper" book, the feel ,the smell, just the turning of the page. I have well over a thousand books that I can't bear to part with and that I can read over and over again.

I use a Kindle but much prefer real books. I have downloaded several on my Kindle that I still haven't got round to reading because I pick up a book book.
