Dogs and geese
« on: June 26, 2015, 09:31:22 am »
We've got two dogs- both adults- and in a few weeks time our half dozen geese will be arriving.
One of the dogs is a whippet-cross who I expect will not be allowed off the lead in the same paddock as the geese, ever. The other is a collie/retriever who I am thinking could be potentially be useful for helping to herd the geese. I don't think she would be likely to attack the geese, I expect it might go the other way round!

Has anybody got any experience of how dogs and geese might co-exist?

My experiences probably aren't typical as I have a stupid poodle  :)
He soon leartn that geese aren't to be messed with and keeps out of the way of anything he doesn't like (geese, sheep) but happily walks amongst the chickens and pigs
Life is like a bowl of cherries, mostly yummy but some dodgy bits

My dogs don't mess with the geese except the small pug who imagines she's the size of a rottweiler and sees even the gander off! Like all bullies, geese are also cowards ;D

Geese generally have an aversion to dogs and will soon teach any that get too close not to do it again. Our lab used to chase any waterfowl she came across but since we've had geese she leaves well alone.

That's the answer - I'll get some geese for Allez to retrieve  :roflanim:
Always have been, always will be, a WYSIWYG - black is black, white is white - no grey in my life! But I'm mellowing in my old age

I have introduced my dogs to all sorts of animals! Birds, cats, skunks, ferrets, deer, horses, sheep, pigs, rabbits etc etc etc and never had a problem. Its all about how you train your dogs, as long as you are confident and have proper control over your dogs and they respect you, you won't have any issues. Dogs are wonderful creatures, so intelligent and willing to learn, its up to us as responsible owners to teach them! I am sure you will be fine

Good luck!
