Ah well I have managed to get round to decorating, I am starting with the window ledges and then the room itself. Can anyone reccomend a nice warm colour for the kitchen? I was thinking this......

I did our kitchen in one of those off-whites and very rapidly it started to look dingy.  Now both the kitchen and bathroom are done in white, with cupboard doors, shower-back etc and accessories, blinds, in the colour - red for kitchen, blue (how original  for bathroom.   I think it might depend on how cluttered the room is - here it's 'very', but if you have nothing out of place then an off white could work.

I like yellow for a kitchen with green curtains and stuff. Looks cheerful and sunny and outdoorsy, I think.

It has taken me years to train OH regarding decorating. there is only one colour to use - white. It comes in big buckets, is the cheapest and if everythig is done white then there's no cutting in around ceilings and walls.
3M low tack blue masking tape will give sharp edges, peel off without damaging paintwork etc so long as removed within 3 days. I buy it cheapish from a motor detailers in scotland (online). Spend a couple fo hours masking off all the woodwork etc and I can then dosh the whoe room out clean with 2-3 coats of emulsion in the one day with a wide brush and roller. If possible all dorrs skirtings and architraves are left as stained wood - a quck tart-up with the same colour stain every few years is all that's needed.

Cheap, bright, clean - what more do you want? If you want colour then hang a picture.

I was thinking not white as it is too plain, B&Q say to do two colour schemes, I just want a nice warming colour, so I think I will use something mixed to a colour am happy with. White is a colour, in my opinion, which reflects emptiness, I love colourful rooms, they look more cheerful.

I have yellow in my kitchen with red tiles and red and green striped curtains. I know it all sounds a bit much but its a big kitchen and can take it. Well I think so anyway

If you are going to mix paint yourself make sure you mix enough.  I did that once and was left with half a wall not done.

I've just refurbished my kitchen.  New doors and drawer fronts, called mussel - pale cream.  My kitchen walls are an off white - just a hint of pink; colour is picked up with a  red cooker, bread bin, kettle, toaster and coffee mugs.  The floor is multicolour rhinofloor.

I go to a shop in town which specializes in mixing paints so that's handy. I show em a colour I want and they mix it for me.

My kitchen has cream unit fronts with slate grey worktops, a deeper cream on the walls and ceiling and a splash of red om woodwork for contrast. I like it. My first kitchen had yellow walls and red gingham curtains.

When we bought this place the kitchen was dire.. it's also an odd shape. I looked about for options and meanwhile my wife organised a visit from a kitchen design place .. silly money and frankly neither of us liked any of their units or the designs they came up with. So I sat down at my PC with a cad program and played about.
Standard stuff just wasn't going to suit OH who has horrors about voids and gaps above cupboards where beasties might lurk.
There is a place called furniture nation in birmingham that has a good looking website.. but since I'm cynical we drove over to take a proper look. Reality is a tiny cramped showroom in a modest inustrial unit with their own workshops. BUT I did get to look around the workshop and inspect the stuff they make - which wasn't bad - half decent joints etc.
The good news is that since they make everything to order at a fair price (much cheaper than better quality flat-pack with no need to DIY assemble) and can therefore adjust sizes to suit at no exorbitant charges... it was easy to get it all made to fit. They also delivered it themselves so one could check. The only cock-up they made was resolved  at reasonable speed without argument.
Commonsense kitchens are going to be at least half-tiled.. by me in white.. with a thin contrast stripe near the top. it avoids all the issues of muddy dogs and wellyboots. Above that wife demanded an off-white..but has since recognised that straight white is better 'cos one is going to be doshing out kitchens on a  regular basis. You've got worktop contrast, utensils and tea towels and can always hang a plate or two etc.. and the quarrytile floor. And a glass fronted cupboard with her smart coffee set etc

Keep it simple.. i have better things to do than fidding with decor. And if and when you come to sell then at least you don't have a colour someone else might hate or a colour you'll need loads of coats to cover It also keeps eveything looking bright. If OH wasn't here I'd probably have gone stainless steel commercial kitchen.. but thats just me.

Sadly its not my house I rent it, so am just painting it. The colour I chose last time turned out to be hideous and I haven't had the time to re-decorate  it. I have a lot of time on me hands now between milking (and other jobs on the farm) so I thought I would brighten the place up a bit. Also its a small kitchen, I would like a nice clean warm colour which can wash easily, maybe an off white. I saw a colour called frosted steel, but it would make the place look cold of a winter.

An off white with a warm colour will be fine - use eggshell or vinyl - easily washed.  My youngster still comes rushing in at top speed and puts her front paws on everything as she checks it all out - muddy paws easily wiped off.

Kitchen and bathroom vinyl in a silk finish has my vote in a kitchen. And I don't think you can beat a warm pale yellow. It just makes it feel like the sun's shining in.
