Our Post Office has been refurbished
« on: June 18, 2015, 02:00:53 pm »
It was closed for a week.  All nicely decorated, and less clutter - oh, that must be so more of us can queue in the shop and not outside then?  Such a shame they have done all this work, but there is still only one lady rushed off her feet, serving at the busiest time of day.  Lady in front of me had 12 ebay parcels to weigh, and each one the cashier asked what it was .....and wrote on the parcel.......and all I wanted was a stamp.

We did have two more post offices, but they have been closed down, so its obvous that we are all going to have to go to the one remaining one, and one cashier is not enough......

Our local Post Office is about to shut for a couple of weeks for refurbishment - meanwhile quite a few of the others in the area have been shut down in the last couple of years.

Happening all over, not just with us here.  Next village had their PO shut down, but they hold a morning session twice a week in the Community Centre. Otherwise, the older people have to travel to the nearest town, as there is not even a bank or machine to withdraw money!!  Do the powers that be realise that not all of us - me included do on line banking?  Although the way its going we will have no choice but to do so.  The last remaining bank in town is about to close too.  But its ok, we have a main street full of take away shops and estate agents ;D

Our village post office closed, said it wasn't worth them doing but immediately complained about the lack of footfall through the rest of the shop that sells gifts. They also used to shut at lunch time, which is when a lot of people want to use it. They opened on the dot and closed on the dot too.

We were lucky and our petrol station took on the post office. They offer everything the old post did but it is open longer as it basically operates from when the pumps open until when they shut. seven days a week. It is a great improvement. Only room for one cashier but I'd rather wait my turn than have no PO at all.

And even if you do, you still need some cash and can't get that through online banking.

MGM  that's very true - no one has devised a way yet of us sitting at our computer and holding our hand out as the cash comes out

In the village where my Dad lives the Post Office closed down as the postmistress retired. A local shop took on the franchise but decided not to offer all the services. Now, to pay for local authority provided services, a trip to the nearest town is required. Here in Caithness our local post master says he's been under pressure to move to opening the same hours as the shop his counter is in - so 7am - 7pm. But he would be paid LESS ! People here really depend on the service and are worried enough about the possible impact of the continued privatisation and threat to universal delivery.

I have noticed the Post Office is now showing their Saturday opening hours include afternoon opening, which they never did before - but as the last post collection is noon, you will not gain anything if you want to post a parcel etc.  And I now have to walk to the Post office to post a letter, as all the post boxes only collect once a day - 9am
