Curious about feeding sheep yeast
« on: June 11, 2015, 10:13:29 pm »
Hello. Whilst at a show with our sheep last week, I was curious about the different feeds other show goers feed their show sheep. A young handler actually listed the feed given to his sheep on the microphone, and he said he fed them yeast among other things, and I was curious as to what kind he may have meant, could it be brewers yeast?

I want to come up with a ration for our show sheep that is a bit more gut friendly than just sheep nuts, we have Oxford Downs and they eat masses, and hence get in a right mess at a show and in the trailer. I noticed a lot of other people feeding a much more fibre based feed at shows with what looks like Hi-Fi (the horse feed), and a mix of cereals, like a blend, but our local suppliers look at me bemused when I ask about blends.

Does anyone else show, or have any ideas or advice.
Thanks in advance x

It's not Brewers yeast but you can get products that contain yeasts to support rumen function. They are often marketed for cows. I think Rumenco do one but not certain
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

When you're due at a show, why not just feed them hay from the day before to dry them up?

Try farmmix by biocell. 5g per head per day. around £40 for 15kg sack. I've got most of my clients using it now for showing & any sheep/calves on a high concentrate ration. Also horses when the grass is changing, to help prevent laminitis grass sickness colic etc. You may find someone local, or your vet, who can sell you a few kg. It makes a huge difference usually within 12-24 hours

Thanks. We do feed them loads of hay, but when you're doing several shows through the season, and are away from home for days, (last show was 5 days away from home) we need to keep up with a hard feed ration to keep condition and routine. It also takes more than a day to dry them up if they have been out on grass, black face = black bum my husband always says!

Just wanted to know if anyone had any knowledge of feeding yeast to improve rumen health and what rations people might have used other than just sheep nuts. I'm always keen to learn from what other find works.
