Ducks & Chickens Living Together
« on: June 05, 2015, 09:52:04 am »
hello everyone
im just wondering if there is any reason why my 9 chickens and 4 runer ducks cant live together
they have been together for around 9 months now but have read a few things warning off it ?
im not sure hwy but does anyone else do it
when they get let out during the day they have an acre to spread out in . also will be introducing their baby ducklings in soon which will be another 6 ducks when they are a good size

do you mean housing or outside? Housing wise, well some people do keep them successfully together but to my mind, chickens need a dry environment whereas ducks are poopy, damp critters :) So mine are housed separately and the ducks have access to water and food at all times. They all run together sort of although roughly segregated but thats mainly to protect my garden from the hens-so they free range in the paddock and the ducks have the rest.

I have my chickens housed also with my 2 Aylesbury ducks with no problems
Only thing is they still have to be chased in at night

The main issue with housing them together is the chickens pooping on the ducks if the ducks are under the perches
Our holding has Anglo Nubian and British Toggenburg goats, Gotland sheep, Franconian Geese, Blue Swedish ducks, a whole load of mongrel hens and two semi-feral children.

I keep mine all together but they are in a byre so plenty of room for everybody. In the winter they go inside when it gets dark which is good but in the summer they stay out really late but we are lucky here that there are no foxes so they just get shut out in the summer and sleep outside.
