Gay pigs!
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:13:44 pm »
This is my second year keeping a couple of pigs.  Last year I kept gilts as I was told it was easier (taint etc.). This year I thought I'd try boars.  They're 3 months old and I've noticed a bit of  boy pig on boy pig action going on  !  I assume its not a problem (they both seem to be enjoying themselves) but I thought I'd ask for some advice.

Also, I'm looking at getting a trailer.  Anyone know of any crazy rules saying I can't use a horse box?  Again, I assume not but then what do I know? (not much apparently)

Eagerly anticipating comedy answers to the gay pig question ;D

I think this is fairly normal Oink. I don't keep pigs but I see the goats and even the dogs do it.

Mine frequently start at a couple of days old.  They fight, they try to have sex, and they eat, its what being a pig is all about.   I dont know if its the same over there, a trailer here needs to be able to be power washed (probably not wooden) with a metal floor and gates to the ramp.  Might be worth phoning your chosen abattoir before you go just to be on the safe side.

Don't worry Oink, quite natural behaviour in pigs...just don't bend down to pick anything up!

Re-trailer...rules say that transport vehicle must be easily and thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after use...hence alloy flooring preferred rather than ribbed matting, also transport trailers should have stock gates...truth is I occasionally use my old horse box (which doesn't comply) and have got away with it, but I prefer to use my aluminium pig trailer...much better for the pigs and a damned sight easier to clean...if you have any doubts try asking a friendly farmer for a loan of a stock trailer...

Good luck, Farmer,  :farmer:

Gay pigs!!!! lol well it all goes on up your way doesnt it!!!  We were going to take our pigs to slaughter in our horsebox , the only reason we didnt in the end was that our horses are terrified of not only pigs but the smell of pigs and we decided it was too risky that they may refuse never to go into the horsebox again, but I would not risk a wooden horsebox as I dont think you would get them clean enough.  :)

Right this is what you should do.

1 Grab a video camera

2 Wait untill you see the 'action'.

3 Film EVERYTHING

4 Send it to a TV show

5 Wait till the check drops on your doorstep.  ;D
